The Thatch Cottage Café
About This Spot
Stepping into The Thatch Cottage Café, located just outside Waterford in the quiet village of Granny, feels like entering a refuge of slow, comforting rhythms. The low light filtering through small thatch house windows creates a warm, intimate glow that invites you to pause and settle in. This is a place shaped by the gentle pace of rural life, where familiar faces and a cozy atmosphere turn a simple meal into a shared moment.
The interior carries the charm of an authentic Irish cottage, where every detail whispers stories of home and tradition. It’s not flashy or bustling—rather, it’s a spot where the steady hum of friendly conversation harmonizes with the clink of coffee cups and the soft rustling of plates. Outside, a generous garden space welcomes dogs and families alike, adding to the easygoing, inclusive vibe that makes visitors linger a little longer.
The food here complements the setting perfectly, rooted in honest, heartfelt cooking that reflects both local flavors and a surprising dash of worldly influence. Breakfasts arrive as hearty companions to the morning, filling plates with satisfying portions that echo the unhurried mood. Later, lighter fare with a touch of creativity—like a seafood crêpe or a whipped goats cheese starter—offers a gentle balance, while comforting puddings and classic homemade treats remind you that indulgence is part of the experience.
The warmth extends beyond the kitchen through the welcoming staff, whose genuine friendliness ensures every guest feels known and cared for. Whether you’re seeking a quiet breakfast with a view of the leafy outdoors or a relaxed lunch shared among friends, The Thatch Cottage Café crafts a sincere local hospitality that stays with you long after you leave.

Great little find. Certainly will be coming back when I see my customer close by again. And the fifth - the best home made sausage roll I've had to date.

Really good, honest Irish restaurant experience with a bar and cafe added. I had a nice turkey and ham dinner. The staff are very friendly and the prices are reasonable, overall I will be going back again

This is a fabulous cafe just outside Waterford. The staff are lovely. Service and food is excellent. There is a nice big outdoor seating area and it's dog friendly. Would recommend for all the family.

Menu is full of tasty treats. Note that breakfast stops at noon. The large breakfast was massive. A big beautiful breakfast that would make the "Bill" jealous. The interior is a little dark due to small thatch house windows.

Lovely place for a meal, good service, the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. The avocado was not fresh tasting and the hollandaise was mediocre. This was Sunday so I think it would be more fresh on another day. Will try again.

Great, friendly service with plenty of parking available. It’s an ideal spot to stop before heading into the city centre. The food was fresh and enjoyable—highly recommend!

Thatch Cottage Cafe The Thatch Cottage Cafe is located just outside Waterford City on the N24 in Grannagh South Kilkenny, just a short hop from the New Bypass. There is parking both out the front, and a large car park at the rear which allows wheelchair accessibility due to steps at the front door. Originally a traditional thatched pub, now tastefully converted into a Cafe, it retains many of its original features and still has a traditional cottage-like feel to it. The decor and furniture is very much in keeping with the building itself, creating a warm homely feel. Service here is absolutely great, and they serve a great Granola for breakfast as well as the traditional options. Staff are attentive, efficient, friendly and helpful, even during peak times when things get busy. If unsure, it may be worth booking your table for breakfast or lunch, as at times, it can be full to capacity. The food is of great quality, presented well, and extremely tasty. If you wish to swap any items on your order, there is no problem, and tea will be refilled without question. For Breakfast, the rashers & sausages in particular are of great quality, and very enjoyable. The Granola is presented with a flourish. I will get a picture of the Granola on the next visit! A great stop off whenever I'm on the area! If you havent been already, do. you wont regret it!
